Similar to community challenges where you play the game, I propose that in community tasks we come together to collect specific information about a meta.
In this case, the meta that I came up with recently is the lesser known meta of manhole covers.
As an example, here is the manhole cover for Nagoya, Japan:
There is a website dedicated to collecting these images called manhole.co.il.
What I propose as a task for each of you is to 1) find a manhole cover from any country that is especially memorable and identifiable, and 2) post an image of said manhole cover together with an actual street view sighting of the manhole cover.
For the above example, here is the street view:
Note that you can share these interactive Google street views with the โshare โ embed a mapโ option from google maps:
No, I had some success in other countries as well.- Canada, USA, Germany, Israel. On many cities you can see the name of the city written on the cover, and you can quickly country guess from the unique general designs, too.
Update. I have over 100 different categories to sort them, and still, every time I open a city in France on Street View I find another one. The only conclussion I have gotten to is that the standard French manhole cover looks like this:
I donโt know if it is unique to France, but this one is the only one I could find in every major city of the country. So, new meta for France? Maybe.
Yeah there typically is one standard design that is used by the whole country or if you are lucky by a region. The bigger the road and the bigger the city, you typically get โcoolerโ looking designs.
And also the name of the city (Leipzig) - sometimes you see a city name on a manhole cover in another city, though. One example is Essen manhole covers which appear in most of North Rhine-Westphalia.
That would be awesome. Iโve recently seen korean and japanese manhole covers that had some text on them, but as I cannot read any asian language I was lost - I tried to match the letters to a city name but was unsuccessful
