What tips do you have that help you the most when you know it is Mexico and you want to region guess it?

ummmm… read the signs and scan for cities, use elevation and compass to try to find a bit that matches along with greeniness.

As is customary, I also made a personal Mexico trainer.
I want to show one cool thing from the Highways mode. Did you know that Mexico routes also roughly follow a similar number order than that of the US?

You might be right 
I do focus on one new country every week - I already had Australia, Russia, US, and now Mexico.
Currently, over half of my region guess misses (a round score lower than 4000) come from these countries:

Isn’t that reasonable if you look at the size of the countries? I doubt if you will ever have an average score of 4.9k+ in Russia

Yes!
Russia for example is a really hard one to minimize the number of misses.
But with size also comes variety in most countries - different vegetation on opposite ends of the country etc. For example, Australia Northern Territories vs South Australia.
So right now the goal is not to get an average score of 4.9k+ but to minimize the ones where I have <4k score.
And I think its a good strategy to focus on the countries with the largest area most of which will show up on the top of the “region miss leaderboard”.
And to not get burned out focusing on only one country, I exclude any countries that I have focused on in the last 4 weeks or so from the selection for a next candidate to learn more about.
