Plonkit guides are actually quite useful. What I do is write down what I see on plonkit on some notes and cluster them so my brain remembers them due to me doing the extra work of writing it manually on paper.
Then I just go in the country and try to recall what I just learned, only focusing on e.g. bollards or poles.

There are quite a lot of quizzes that can help out - for me I learned brazil area codes from helloquiz - these phone codes appear a lot on buildings etc so its very useful to know.
The same with Russian phone codes.

For me, it is mostly just practice - so I do 100 timed rounds in Russia, for example, and try to find any useful information that I know about - phone codes, architecture, area codes from license plates or buildings, road names, etc. If I fail hard then I go revisit those rounds and see if I can find anything right from the beginning that I did not pay attention to but that any guide such as the plonkit guide told me is very useful to region guess.

By the way, you’re starting all your sentences with “I mean” which is unnecessary clutter  - you can drop it to be brief.
