I have a suggestion that might completely shake up Ranked Duels. It may be difficult to implement, but I hope I can find some support for the idea here.
What is the idea?
The idea is that, before joining the queue to wait for the next opponent, every player selects which game mode they want to play.
For example:
Player A is a Nomad. Since Nomads are generally big fans of No Move and NMPZ (and players who rely on movement can usually find their opponents without it), Player A selects the options “No Move” and “NMPZ” in the selection screen.
Players B and C are Explorers. Explorers prefer to base their guesses on more information, vibes, and movement. Therefore, both players select “Moving.”
Player D is a Voyager. A Voyager who needs multiple frames to make a reliable guess, but still bases their guess on less information than an Explorer/Trekker, might select “No Move.”
The result
The matches are played in the matching mode. So:
-
Player A gets matched against Player D, with the match being played in No Move. Both players are happy!
-
Player B gets matched against Player C, with the match being played in Moving. Again, both players are happy!
Is this system fair?
Yes, I think it would be much fairer.
- Trekkers and Explorers would continue playing Moving.
- Voyagers might feel comfortable trying No Move.
- Nomads could continue improving their skills by playing NMPZ ranked. (Just look at Zi8gzag’s videos: he plays almost exclusively NMPZ, and look at how good he has become at it.)
Would this result in longer queue times?
I don’t think so. In general, players of similar levels would be matched with each other more often, so I think it would ultimately be beneficial.
Are there any other advantages?
Yes!
-
There would be no need to create a separate No Move Ranked Duels mode. It could simply be integrated into Ranked Duels.
-
The quality of play within the Voyager/Nomad pool would be higher, because there would no longer be road names appearing anywhere in the Ranked Duels section.
Additional suggestion
If this system were implemented, I think it would also be great to change the structure of the games.
I believe it would be better to turn Duels into Knockout Duels with individual multipliers. The differences between players can be extremely small (I recently won a game by only 8 points). Five rounds simply aren’t enough to reliably demonstrate who the better player is.
By introducing individual multipliers, these games could also remain reasonably short.
Sorry if this sounds very similar to GeoGuessr’s model. However, I think this system works very well, and I believe it could give the game a real boost.
