Should I re-add chat to WorldGuessr?

I previously removed chat from WorldGuessr because of safety and moderation concerns. But after a ton of people requesting it back, I’m now considering bringing chat back in a more limited form.

Instead of adding it to every game mode, chat would only be available in:

  • Parties

  • 2v2 matches

The idea is that these modes are more social and usually involve players who intentionally choose to play together. Chat could make coordinating with teammates easier and make parties feel more interactive.

There would still need to be safety features, such as reporting, blocking, chat filters, rate limits, and the ability for people to disable chat anytime.

What do you all think?

I think the first step and easiest (but not complete) solution to the safety features dilemma is to restrict chat to signed-in users, as it is less likely (though not completely unlikely) that underage users or users that are part of an organization will be able to access chat functionality.

Yeah I initially did it to help get it unblocked at some school districts but I think with strict moderation and having it in very few game modes I think it can be re added

Sounds good! I would also request that there be a way to send messages to people on friendlist with the same safety features you would need.

Maybe in ranked 1v1s, since most of the time people respect rules there

if chat history is added u can add chatbans

Block it for treckers and for low end voyagers, that should fix it

You could also go the route of allowing only emojis or some sort of phrase wheel if normal chats are too problematic for school districts

Maybe only emojis for trekkers, and actual chat for the other ranks?

we had them but you couldn’t report messages directly

so they were ineffective

it might encourage trekkers to play more to unlock chat and stuff
